Earth Day Calligraphy
April 27th, 2024, 10am-12pm
$50 a person
A special, one-of-a-kind calligraphy workshop geared just for Earth Day. You’ll receive 2 extra ink colors in your kits just for the occasion, that you’ll learn to handmix yourself (yes, for Earth Day, of course!). The colors you’ll receive will be an “Earthy” green (how many times can we say Earth in a description?), & a soft peach to celebrate the blooming flowers. You will also learn the basics of holding and understanding the anatomy of the pen, dipping the pen into the ink, playing with other colored inks, scribing the alphabet, & trying your hand at scribing some words & sentences, & perhaps even try at some Earth Day phrases to perhaps (gasp!) hang up & frame in your home! Each student will receive & take home The Hive Studio Calligraphy Kit, a beautifully crafted calligraphy starter kit, along with a handmade booklet of practice papers & resources to use in class and to take home to practice.

You will also learn the basics of holding and understanding the anatomy of the pen, dipping the pen into the ink, playing with other colored inks, scribing the alphabet, & trying your hand at scribing some words & sentences, & perhaps even try at some lovely phrases to create some greeting cards. Mushroom Mania
June 8, 2024
1:00pm-4:00pm
$75 a person
Unleash your inner “Mother Nature” and join us for this 4 hour class on creating magical mushroom decor using three different mediums. We will make colorful stuffed velvet mushrooms, delicate paper mushrooms, and sweet little fairy light mushrooms. If time allows we will take a walk in the woods adjoining the studio to gather even more materials to incorporate into your vignettes. Once home, your mushrooms can be displayed individually or in clusters. Attach them to a piece of wood surrounded by moss, sticks, pinecones, and acorns to place on a bookshelf or under a cloche. Hang them as ornaments or part of a decorative banner. Attach them to a wreath for a woodsy fairy-like effect. All supplies and tools will be provided along with light snacks and beverages. Because basic hand stitching, scissor, and glue gun skills are needed this class will be limited to adults and teens.
There is room for 10 participants. Cost of this triple technique class is $75.

Wax Resist Workshop
Instructor: Meredith Martin
August 3rd, 2024
12:00pm-4:00pm
$95 a person
Whether you have enjoyed trying wax resist in other workshops, or if you are totally new to this medium, you are welcome to join us for this more in-depth look at a surprisingly exciting drawing process utilizing wax, acrylic paint and ink. This workshop helps you define tonality in your work, clarifies drawing elements, and actually helps you with the process of planning a composition, even though you’ll hardly be aware you’re doing it! Experienced and inexperienced artists can enjoy wax resist since results are not necessarily determined by drawing or painting skill, but rather a willingness to try new things. In fact, students say the results seem ‘magical’! All supplies are included in the fee. Bring a black and white photo of something you want to paint, or photos will be available.
Meredith is the owner of Sunbear Studio and has over 20 years teaching experience.

Avery Applegate will teach the basics of a simple bookbinding technique known as Japanese Stab Binding. After choosing a beautiful decorative paper, you will learn how to construct a hard backed book cover into which you will place pages using a stitching technique to hold it all together. You will also be making a bonus book using a binding technique that is so super easy Avery couldn’t resist throwing it in!
At the end of the session you will be able to take away the skills you’ve learned and the books you’ve made.
All materials and resources for the bookmaking projects are provided along with light snacks and beverages.
